Takeout packaging is judged on a customer's kitchen counter, twenty minutes after it leaves you. That's the standard to buy against.
Match the container to the food
- Fried items need venting or they steam themselves soft — avoid a fully sealed clear lid.
- Saucy items need a deep, leak-resistant container and a separate portion cup for extra sauce.
- Cold items — salads, rolls, desserts — sell better in clear packaging that shows the food.
- Hot plated items need heat retention more than clarity; foil and coated board beat clear plastic.
Cut SKUs where the customer can't tell
Most kitchens carry two or three container sizes that overlap almost completely. Pick one, run it out, and don't reorder. Fewer SKUs means faster expo, less dead inventory and a shorter order guide.
Test with your actual delivery time
Before you commit to a case count, pack a real order, let it sit as long as your average delivery takes, then open it. Soggy fries or a leaked lid found in testing costs a lot less than found in a review.
